Shy dogs in shelters have more trouble getting adopted than those that are outgoing. The Humane Society in Missouri has a program to help them overcome this fear and become more adoptable. Once a month, children visit shelters and read story books to them.

Children are able to practice their reading skills in a setting without pressure. They are relaxed, engaged, and if they make a mistake, no one ever knows. The enhance their compassion through caring for lonely dogs.
They take a 10 hour course on understanding dog behavior and affect so they can judge how loud they should talk, how much they can move around and best practices for working with scared animals.
The dogs in turn are exposed to people more. They begin to let their guard down. Their fear lessons. The result is a more friendly pooch with greater odds of being chosen for a permanent loving home.
